Given the press in recent years for HRT, it would be easy to think that no one goes through the menopause naturally in the UK anymore, maybe that it just isn’t possible to…?
What is the menopause?
The menopause is a normal part of the aging process for women, usually taking place between the ages of 45 and 55. Once a woman reaches a certain age, it wouldn’t be a good idea for her to have any more children, that is the age where the ovaries naturally stop producing hormones. There are huge changes taking place in the body – of course the body will feel different during the menopause.
Menopause or Metamorphosis
I see the menopause as a magnificent thing… Women are children, then hormones kick in and they metamorphosize into young ladies, able to make babies – how incredibly magnificent is that process? Anyone going through the menopause will have been through puberty – it’s a process, there may be some downsides to it such as low mood at times, shaving and the tricky process of managing the bleeding and fertility itself but there is huge personal growth, empowerment and confidence that comes with it too.
I see the menopause in a similar way, women move away from being child-bearers and back to putting themselves first. Some may enjoy being grandparents and being able to put all their energy into their extended family, others may find at this time that they can return to their careers, travel the world or simply not have to put up with the debilitating periods they’ve suffered from most of their adult life.
Either way, there is a metamorphosis taking place, women should expect to feel change, maybe some night-waking, maybe some night-sweats, maybe some change in mood due to the hormone change, but rather than try to wave it all away with a magic wand, we should embrace it, appreciate what is taking place, know it is temporary and that the other side is a wonderful place to be. Going through any process is always easier when approached with a positive state of mind – and there are options to reduce those symptoms – more below 😀
HRT
Now I couldn’t write about the menopause in 2025 without mentioning HRT, could I?
According to GOV.UK (2023) approx 15% of women aged 45 to 64 in England are currently prescribed HRT, an increase from 11% in 2021.
Many feel that HRT reduces their perimenopausal symptoms and they feel much better as a result of taking it. It is important for everyone that takes it to be aware that HRT may in itself have side effects such as headaches, nausea, mood changes, muscle cramps, diarrhoea and rashes or itchy skin (NHS, 2023). Full details will be listed in your medication leaflet and on the NHS website.
Can Homeopathy help with menopause symptoms?
Absolutely. There are plenty of women, including myself, that have benefitted from homeopathy to reduce the symptoms of menopause. Here are some of the most common remedies:
1. Lachesis: hot flushes, cannot bear tight clothing, skin feels tight, irritable, jealous and spiteful, feel better when period starts.
2. Sepia: Feeling worn out, low energy, indifferent to the family and their needs, low libido, may feel a dragging down sensation.
3. Sanguinaria: May look in control but feel vulnerable, agitated, shocked, nervous. Perfumes may make them feel nauseous. Feel paralysed with helplessness. Want to be held. Their feet are hot, so they pop them out from under the duvet at night.
4. Aristolochia Clematis: Feel trapped, used and abused, depressed. These women are suffering from empty nest syndrome, they felt trapped when the children were home, but now they’ve left, they feel no longer needed.
So in summary, embrace the menopause, it is such a special time, a time of change, of evolution, of personal growth. Sure going through the process won’t always be easy but homeopathy can help to reduce those symptoms. It can help your body to go through the process as and when it is ready to do so, enabling you to come out the other side with a freedom to focus on how you want to spend this third part of your life. It’s a great opportunity to refocus on your goals and plan how you will achieve them.
